Not afraid of death
A newly married man was returning home with his wife.
They were crossing a lake in a boat, when suddenly a violent storm arose. The man, being a warrior, was unperturbed by it, but the woman became extremely afraid because it seemed almost hopeless: the boat was too small to survive the stormy weather. She feared that the boat would capsize any moment and they were sure to drown in the deep waters of the lake.
Through all of this, the man sat silently, calm and quiet, as if nothing was wrong.
Trembling with fear, the woman said to her husband, “Are you not afraid of death? This could be the last moment of our life! It appears that we may never be able to get across to the shore. Only some miracle can now save us; otherwise death is certain”.
She continued to nudge him saying, “Are you not afraid of death? Are you out of your mind? Why don’t you react?”
The man laughed and took the sword out of its sheath.
The woman was even more puzzled with what he was doing.
He then placed the bare sword precariously close to his wife’s neck and asked, “Are you afraid of death?” She burst out laughing and said,” Why should I be afraid when the sword is in your hands? I know you love me & will do me no harm.”
He put the sword aside and said, “This is exactly my answer. I know that God loves me, and the storm is in His hands.”
“Whatever is going to happen will happen for our good. Whether we survive or we don’t, either way, everything is in His hands and He cannot do anything wrong as He always has our best interest in mind.”
Moral: Develop Trust. This is the trust that one needs to imbibe. By nurturing it, one can become capable of transforming one’s whole life.
